Restaurant Review: Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio

We are big Rome restaurant fans, have a pretty good roster of Rome restaurants, and were very excited to share some of these spots with our friends on our October trip to Rome. We originally planned to take our friends to another Testaccio favorite but we had to pivot at the last minute and luckily scored a reservation at Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio! This was our second visit to Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio, and it was just as great as the first (if not better). Highly recommend Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio for a solid Roman meal in Rome. This post details our dinner at Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio in October 2025.

Angelina a Testaccio – lunch, dinner and cocktails!

ANGELINA A TESTACCIO

Angelina a Testaccio is a Roman restaurant serving traditional Roman fare, including local wine, delicious appetizers specific to Lazio, and, of course, Rome’s 4 famous pastas! Angelina is one of 3 “Angelina” locations in Rome, and this one is located in Rome’s Testaccio neighborhood. For those unfamiliar, Testaccio is home to Rome’s only pyramid and also used to be the site of Rome’s slaughterhouses, leading to some excellent restaurants (kind of odd, I know). Angelina a Testaccio keeps some of the original slaughterhouse vibe (for lack of a better word, LOL) alive through its architecture, including some original furnishings, its sloping floor, the rods on the ceiling where the skins were attached, the signs indicating the breeds of meat, large fireplaces and in the center, a table recovered from an ancient convent.

No worries though, Angelina is super cute and in my opinion, gives sort of an Anthropologie vibe (much more Anthro than slaughterhouse). Think pretty plates, lots of flowers, and a spacious air setting. We were seated on the second floor, and it felt like the perfect place for a large Roman dinner.

A place setting at Angelina a Testaccio. Definitely giving Anthro.

DRINKS AT ANGELINA A TESTACCIO

Angelina a Testaccio has a full cocktail menu and wine list. It, however, considers itself a cocktail bar, so we opted for cocktails. The cocktails were well prepared and very pretty!

A cocktail that Dan ordered.

My cocktail was pretty.

PRIMI AT RISTORANTE ANGELINA A TESTACCIO

To start our meal, we were intrigued by the “Angelina Appetizer”. Described as “a selection of 5 proposals of traditional Roman food”, we didn’t know what we were getting. The cost is 26 euro for 2 people. This seemed expensive on paper, but the dish was actually big enough for 3 or 4 people, making the price much more reasonable. While we did know what would be included in our appetizer, it was really great.

First brought out was eggplant parmesan, which everyone in our group really loves (except Dan!). This eggplant parmesan was done in the Roman style (of course – not American style) and was fresh and light.

Second, some sort of fried bread with a creamy topping and rosemary. This was good. Light, despite looking heavy.

Cannot recall the name of this dish.

Third, meatballs in a traditional red sauce. These meatballs were very, very good. Traditional meatballs; very tasty sauce.

Fourth, the tastiest looking fried bits with a delicious looking white sauce. This plate looked great. Unfortunately for me, however, the fried bits were fried sardines, which tasted like sardines (of which I am really not a fan)…. Oh well! Others in our group enjoyed them, and you could tell they were well prepared. The white sauce, even without the friend sardines, was delicious.

Fried sardines with a very good sauce.

Finally, a bread, tomato sauce, and Burrata cheese mixture. This was very, very good. It reminded me a bit of “day old bread” dishes that I have tried in Florence.

This cheese was super good.

CONTORINI AT RISTORANTE ANGELINA A TESTACCIO

In rome, main courses are just that, the main course. No sides usually. Instead, there is a selection of side dishes on the menu called contorini, which are generally ordered at the table and shared. We ordered a seasonal mixed salad, which was quite big and very fresh.

This was just a seasonal salad.

SECONDO AT RISTORANTE A TESTACCIO

For our main course, we all opted for the fresh pasta, as it was our next to last night in Rome (SAD). Between the table, we all either ordered Amatriciana, Gricia, or the restaurant’s specialty of Tagliolini with beef ragout and 24 month parmesan. Each pasta was insanely good, but the winner, in my opinion, was the tagliolini with beef ragout and 24 month parmesan. Pasta dishes cost between 13 and 26 euro, and fresh pasta is available on Saturday and Sunday!

DOLCE AT ANGELINA RISTORANTE A TESTACCIO

Finally, we had to get dessert top top off our meal! We opted for this chocolate covered cake, which was very good. Ristorante Angelia a Testaccio also serves an insane tiramisu in a jar that is probably the best I have ever tasted. Worth saving room for!
