Flatey Pizza Napoletana: Excellent Pizza In Reykjavik!

Flatey Pizza is a casual, yet super popular, spot in Reykjavik with its main dining room a short walk from the Harpa concert hall. I found it staking Iceland foodie pics on Instagram. As you probably know, I love pizza, so of course I made a reservation here for our Valentine’s day dinner!

We did not make a reservation in advance, only because I could not figure out how to make one in advance. In any case, we arrived close to 8 PM and Flatey was packed with locals. The restaurant took our phone number down and invited to the upstairs bar. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and during this time, enjoyed a G&T made with Iceland’s famous gin.  We received a text that our table was ready downstairs just as we finished our drinks.

Upon arriving downstairs, we were seated at a four top table just in front of the open kitchen, which featured a large brick oven (reminiscent of Pizzicletta in Flagstaff, AZ). The main dining area is not that large, and it was  packed when we visited. That being said, it was Valentine’s day, but it was also the evening after Storm Dennis. Not sure if that helped or hurt Flatey’s crowds. Most patrons seemed local and there were a number of families dining. Children are most certainly welcome here. The menus double as placemats and are short and sweet.

We didn’t need to think about the menu for long, as we were obviously ordering the brick oven pizza (not that there is much else on the menu)! I ordered the Nduja, which was topped with San Marzano tomatoes (the bestest tomatoes), olive oil, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, and n’duja sausage! This pizza was totally amazing!! I’m pretty sure I finished the entire pie. Dan ordered what I believe was the special of the evening, which was basically a pepperoni pizza with chilies and jalapenos, and some other good things. Mine was certainly better, but both were super tasty! The dough and crust were 100%.

Dan’s pie. I believe it was a special.

Despite us both eating whole pizzas, we ordered a dessert to split since it was Valentine’s Day! We split a brick oven flat bread topped with Nutella and pistachios. It was so good!! Despite us being “full,” we also ate the entire dessert pizza. It was that good. A highly recommended way to end our meal and Valentine’s Day!

STEAL OUR TRIP

Flatey Pizza: Grandagarður 11, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland. Open daily 11:00 – 21:00. Casual, be prepared to wait for a table. There is a second location at the Hlemmur Food Hall, just next to the main Reykjavik bus station.

ON A BUDGET

In pricey Reykjavik, Flatey is decently priced in my opinion. If you are on a shoestring budget, pick up take away from the Hlemmur Food Court and share with travel buddies.  Alternatively, Reykjavik is full of inexpensive grocery stores (Bonus is a particularly inexpensive one). Visit for ingredients and make your own pizza!
