Livingstone, Zambia is a walkable town with a number of restaurants that seem tourist-friendly. On our first night, we ended up walking just down the street from our hotel to Cafe Zambezi, an Africa/Caribbean restaurant located in a strip mall! Odd mix!
While its in a strip mall, the restaurant is quite large. The front is all enclosed like a normal pub, but the back opens up to include outdoor seating! The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists, both international and African, and one could certainly meet fellow travelers here. All of the staff spoke English and were quite accommodating!
The menu is an interesting mix of African and Caribbean. It had some really interesting choices for the daring (in my case, Dan), including caterpillars, goat, crocodile and a number of other African (although not necessarily Zambian) dishes. One of the best deals were the platters, which contained a mix of several dishes tied together with a theme! These platters came with a lot of food and were popular with groups!
Dan went with the “croc” them and his huge plate (above) included crocodile bites, jerk wings, crocodile ribs, nyama chana, veg and feta pack, ballot rice and chips. We did not leave hungry!
He tried the caterpillars, too!
For the less adventurous, there are still a number of options, including basic pizza and burgers for the least adventurous. I tried the local fried cheese! Always a winner! And the samosas! Both were delicious and a hefty serving. I did try one of Dan’s caterpillars…it tasted like a burnt crisp!
In addition to a restaurant, Cafe Zambezi acts as a bar, and they claim to serve the best cocktails in Zambia! They also serve beer, including the local beer, Mosi Lager (complete with Victoria Falls on the label!), wine and all types of non-alcoholic beverages.
We liked the food so much, we went back our second night! If you find yourself in Livingstone, definitely check out this place for a meal!
