A good, non-touristy game restaurant.  More difficult to find that I imagined.  A number of people we spoke to went to the tourist-favorite Mama Africa, but I was determined to find something more authentic.  Luckily for me, I came across Savoy Cabbage doing some internet research and it ended up being a fabulous choice for game and a champagne bar!!  I love champagne bars!

We made reservations easily online and our table was waiting when we arrived.  The interior of the restaurant was so cute and the service was impeccable.  More important, however, they had a good selection of game done in a modern way.  Fantastic!

We started with a complementary amuse bouche, mini-toasts with tomato compote.  I loved these!

For starters, Dan ordered the sugar-cubed zebra served with soba noodles and mango salsa.  The combination went together very well, and I truly did not feel like I was eating zebra.  When alone, the zebra tasted a lot like horse.  The texture was similar, too.  Note, I felt terrible about eating this after seeing zebra in the wild.  Maybe go early in your trip.

I was less adventurous and went with the steak tartare.  Always a winner in my book, even that time I ate it in a dive bar in Budapest!

For mains, Dan went with the warthog loin.  It came with some amazing mustard spatzle.  The warthog was very mild and reminiscent of pork.  Really, I thought I was eating a lean pig.  This would be a good choice for those iffy on game. For my main, I opted for impala.  This tasted a lot like venison and was served very rare, which I loved!  While I enjoyed my dish, Dan’s warthog was much better in my opinion… After, we were stuffed, but made room for the house creme brulee.  Yummy!

We also had some Cap Classique (sparkling wine from South Africa) from the small champagne bar in the restaurant.
